(Last Updated On: )

But Will It Comprehensively Hold And Will It Last?

By Our Staff Writer

Within just 24 hours, the Unity Party (UP) government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has announced price reductions of various basic commodities, including Liberia’s staple food, rice.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Executive Mansion revealed that the prices of rice and flour is being reduced.

And a day after, the government says the price of eggs is also being dropped, saying the latest move comes “following report and recommendation from the Presidential Ad-Hoc Committee on Price Contradictions, chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr.”

But what the Presidency did not say is the there has been mounting public outcry about increasing economic hardships and increasing in the prices of basic commodities on the Liberian market, amid the high unemployment rate and the hike in the exchange rate on the local money market.

Many citizens are welcoming the announcement on the reduction of prices, but many are skeptical about whether they will comprehensively hold across the country and how long the price reductions will last.

It is hoped that the latest announced price reductions will have concrete impact on the ordinary consumers.

But only time will tell.
