Campaign to monitor loggers’ use of Liberian forest

A The National Union of Community Forestry Development Committees has launched a campaign aimed at monitoring the use of the forest during commercial logging.

The campaign was launched campaign in collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

The campaign is being carried out under the theme: “Tracking Progress: Strengthening Community Capacity to Monitor Benefits from Commercial Logging in Liberia.”

According to the Technical Manager for Commercial Forestry Department at the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), the forest monitoring campaign will last for one year with the cost of over US$80,000 at the expense of the UN.

Speaking at the launch this week, Mr. Jerry Yarnah said that the international community relies on the Liberian government and community to protect the Tropical Rainforest in Liberia.

He said the CDC-led government will ensure that the forest communities will get the fair share of funds generated from commercial logging from forest in their communities.

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Policy Officer, Al-Hassan Cisse assured the forest community and the Liberian government of the international community’s fullest cooperation in preserving the forest.

He expressed the international community’s concern about activities that are unfolding in the Tropical Rainforest of Liberia, because they do not want the eco system to be destroyed.

The forest monitoring campaign, which is funded by the FAO, will be taken to all forest communities throughout the country.
