HARPER, Liberia- The College of Arts and Science, Department of Environmental Science of the William V S Tubman University in the southeastern region has joined the rest of the world in celebrating the WORLD WETLAND DAY as been celebrated globally by others Countries and Universities .
The indoor program was graced by faculty, staff and student from its two department Natural science and Mathematics and Environmental Sciences the College of Arts and Sciences, high schools students from Cape Plamas High. Others attending were represented were J .S Pratt United Methodist High School, Jireh Solid Foundation, American Base Organization Partners In Health ,County Health Officer, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Rebecca Marie fe Gueta, Dean of the Dr. Elizabeth Davies Russell College of Education , Dr. Jerry Bua-0 , City Mayor ,Superintendent George Andrew Prowd ,dean of various Colleges amongst others.
According to the organizers, the World Wetland Day is set aside by environmentalist to create massive awareness on WETLAND and its importance celebrated across the entire globe by Countries and Universities.
The global theme is: “WETLANDS AND WATER “
The celebration of the World Wetland Day started with a parade through the principle streets of Harper and was concluded with an indoor program on the main campus of the William V S Tubman University, just few miles outside the Port City of Harper.
One of the presentations were done during the indoor program by Miss. Esther Amo Adije, a professor of Biology at the College of Arts and Sciences who presented on The Role of Wetland in Community Sustainability.
During her power point presentation, she outlined several factors of wetland importance to community sustainability and its benefit for the Community.
Speaking to Reporters, Mr. Nyuma Fallah, Professor of Environmental Science department said this day is celebrated on 2 of February every year and it was firstly observed in 1962.
Prof. Fallah underscored the importance of celebrating the day along with the world since indeed Tubman University has the Department of Environment Science that deals with the study of the Environment and its inhabitants.
“Our celebration is highly educative, in the sense that we paraded with slogans saying protect the wetlands and waters and don’t used them for dumpsite,” Prof. Fallah said.
Fallah, who teaches EVS at the College of Arts and Sciences Tubman University, used the occasion to encourage Marylanders and Liberians to secure wetlands and waters
“Take care of wetland because it’s a nature site and it’s also provide health and economic benefits for the Country,” Prof. Fallah said.
For his part, Professor Francis Nyemah Fayiah thanked the University for their Support to the College and the department of Environmental sciences for holding such educative celebration.
“I want to call on the our people to joins us as we fight against the misuse of Wetland and waters, “ Prof. Fayiah said.
