A Liberian pro-democracy group has released findings from a survey conducted on voters’ perceptions about the lawmakers, since the 2017 presidential and legislative elections.
The National Youth Movement for Transparent Elections (NAYMOTE) said, 59 percent of voters disclosed that they have seen their representatives, while 41 percent pointed out that they have not seen their representatives since they were voted into offices.
The Liberian House of Representatives comprises 73 Representatives from the 15 counties.
Addressing a press conference in Congo Town, NAYMOTE Director of Program, Mr. Weah-Weah revealed that 88 percent of voters noted that they do not trust that their lawmakers would deliver on their promises, while 12 percent said the contrary.
According to the survey, 82 percent of voters want their representatives to visit their constituency monthly and 12 percent wish their lawmakers visit quarterly.
The study said 40 percent of voters believe the most effective means of communication with their lawmakers is through town hall meetings, while 22 percent said they want the representatives visit them and eight percent want phone calls.
NAYMOTE pointed out that it has discovered that 71 percent of voters rated the government’s provision of basic social service in their communities as poor, ten percent said fait while 19 percent termed it as good.
On the appointment of local government officials, 80 percent of voters said they want their local government officials elected while 20 percent said they satisfied the current appointment
The findings of the NAYEMOTE study also said Liberians predicted that the issue of land conflict has the propensity to create another bloody conflict in this country, if care in not taken.
