Dead Blue Whale Surfaces On Liberia’s Gr. Kru County Atlantic Beach

In the morning hours of today, Wednesday, October 27, 2021, a dead whale was seen floating from the Atlantic Ocean to the beach of Liberia’s southeastern Grand Kru County, 576 kilometers from Monrovia.

Some locals are said to be taking their slices of the meat from the dead whale for cooking but it is not known how safe it is for human consumption.

According to the Blue Whale | Species | WWF (worldwildlife.org), “The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet, weighing as much as 200 tons (approximately 33 elephants). The blue whale has a heart the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Its stomach can hold one ton of krill and it needs to eat about four tons of krill each day”

Dozens of residents of Poor River Waterside in Trehn Statutory District and its environs were  awaken to the discovery of a gigantic Whale on the beach In Poor River.

According to reports reaching www.newspublictrust.com from the area, many of those who went over to see the dead whale were seen with cutlasses to get their share of the huge sea creature.

They expressed mixed reactions over its appearance on the beach.

Eyewitnesses said the whale was first seen by some fishermen who were on their fishing expedition when they spotted  the whale floating on the water, thus calling for a help from the community resident

They said this is the first time a dead whale has been seen in this part of the country in recent times.

The  Blue Whale was dragged  by the  Ocean to the beach land and in Pool River Waterside, Grand kru Trehn Statutory District by locals in the area.

Thousands of residents of Trehn Statutory District and its environs were seen on the Poor River Waterside in a frenzy chopping the Whale into pieces, with some of the meat being sold for cooking.

It is yet to be established how the whale died and whether its meat is good for human consumption.

But some of the local residents claimed that the dead Whale is a blessing from God.

It is said that during the 20th century, the blue whale was an important whaling target and even after it was protected and commercial whaling stopped in 1966,

Wikipedia says “the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whale parvorder Mysticeti. Reaching a maximum confirmed length of 29.9 metres (98 ft) and weighing up to 199 tonnes (196 long tons; 219 short tons), it is the largest animal known to have ever existed…”.
