A great Liberian writer and Historian and former Liberian diplomat, Dr. Joseph Saye Guannu is dead, according to reports.

Dr. Guannu has died just under three weeks to his 82nd birthday. He was born on September 17, 1940.

According to the late Dr. Guannue grandson, his grandfather died at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital in Ganta, in his home County, Nimba at 8:30pm early Tuesday morning, after they left the same hospital one week ago.

Forgotten by the State on his dying bed

The prominent Liberian University Professor, educator and writer was said to have been neglected by the state, as he battled his illness without any national assistance given to while on his sick bed in Sanniquellie. Outgoing Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor is one of few who was singled out by family members who always used to reach out to the ailing Liberian Historian who is now deceased.

Prof. Guannu’s grandson who was his caretaker said, his grandfather wasn’t suffering from sickness that needed millions of dollars, but he didn’t get the kind of help he needed from the state for four to five years. He was his grandfather, changing and even checking on him at night.

Prince Guannu explained to www.newspublictrust.com on Monday, August 29,2022 that he left his grandfather at home after providing his normal care and went to school. But upon his return from school, he met his grandfather coughing seriously and he called a community Nurse who prescribed some medication on scene. However, the Nurse later advised that he should be taken to the Ganta United Methodist hospital. Unfortunately, upon their arrival, Dr. Guannu he was already dead.

“Everyone posting this death news on social media including people whom he greatly help couldn’t even assist him except Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor but they are the one posting on the Social Media,” the grandson of the fallen Liberian intellectual said.

“I’m here this morning to wake him up and bath him but I can’t see anyone on the bed, it hard for me and I’m still feeling that he’s around me,” Prince Guannue explained in tears.

Prior to his death, Dr. Guannu is said he stopped eating rice and he was living on creamer wheat and trying to wash his balance clothes as I await other family members but at the moment, he has been taken to a funeral home.

After his immensely contribution to the Liberia and internationally what will he be remembered for?
