The reported release of a convicted drug trafficker from prison has triggered renewed calls for transparency and accountability in Liberia’s fight against illicit drugs.

Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has expressed serious concern over reports that convicted drug offender Marcus Brown, also identified as Michael Brown, was released from prison under what he described as “unclear and questionable circumstances.”

According to Senator Dillon, Brown was convicted and sentenced in 2023 for possession and trafficking of illicit drugs under Liberia’s drug laws and should still be serving his prison sentence under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice.

The senator questioned the circumstances surrounding Brown’s reported release in late 2024, calling for a full investigation into the matter. He said the judge who allegedly ordered the prisoner’s release should be questioned and, if warranted, face impeachment proceedings. He also insisted that officials within the Ministry of Justice who may have facilitated the release must be held accountable.

Sen. Dillon reaffirmed his commitment to the country’s fight against illicit drugs, emphasizing that no individual should be above the law.

He disclosed that upon his return from London next week, he intends to raise the issue in the Liberian Senate, seeking a thorough investigation to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.

The senator concluded by stressing that Liberia’s campaign against illicit and controlled drugs must be pursued “without fear or favor,” insisting that those responsible for any wrongdoing must face the full weight of the law.
