With the emergence of digital media to up-skill quality Journalism, Internews/USAID Liberia Media Activity has embarked on media education curriculum support at the state-owned University of Liberia.

A significant portion of the support happened on August 17 and 18, 2023 when the Internews Media Development Advisor/Project Director for Sierra Leone, Arwen Kidd conducted a way-to-teach session for instructors of the Media and Communication Department, University of Liberia.

Arwen, herself an experienced photojournalist, facilitated the training from a practical advantage point that makes teaching-learning effective for students.

“Photojournalism now goes beyond the Print. Radio stations use cultivating photographs on their social media platforms.  This makes Photojournalism a useful material for the entire Journalism,” Print Expert Sayon Kieh of the Joe Mulbah Center for Journalism & Public Relations said.

At the opening of the training session, Internews Liberia Chief of Party, Lien Bach stated her institution’s intent to support the media curriculum upgrade for the Department of Communication & Media Studies at the University of Liberia. Lien said that in order to have sustainable quality media education, it was important to support media training institutions in the country, the University of Liberia as the biggest, to deliver sustainable and quality media training for upcoming media workers.

UL Communication Department Chair, Uriahs Togar thanked Internews for the support. Chair Togar said the department has been making frantic efforts to upgrade and make effective contemporary media training.  About 10 lecturers and staff attended the training at the Internews office in Sinkor, Monrovia.
