Monrovia, Liberia – The attention of the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has been drawn to at least two recent fatal incidents within the electricity distribution networks of Jungle Energy Power (JEP) in Gbarnga, Bong County, the LERC says.
The Commission is treating these incidents with the utmost seriousness and has commenced investigations, in accordance with applicable regulations, to determine their causes and ensure the implementation of measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences and safeguarding public safety.
LERC assures the public that the findings and outcomes of the investigations will be communicated in the interest of transparency, accountability, and public confidence.
On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the Investigative Bong Eye Newspaper and several individual journalists reported a fire outbreak within the licensed distribution network area of Jungle Energy Power (JEP), specifically in the Chief Compound Community, Gbarnga City, Bong County. According to the reports, the incident allegedly involved the severing of two 33 kV distribution lines following a loud explosion believed to have originated from a transformer station located within the affected community.
The incident reportedly resulted in the tragic deaths of two children and caused damage to several residential properties belonging to customers residing within the affected area.
The Commission has requested the JEP Management to urgently submit a comprehensive incident report within the prescribed regulatory timeframe detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the probable cause, extent of damages, remedial actions undertaken, and measures proposed to prevent recurrence among others.
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners (BoC), Hon. Claude J. Katta extends “deepest condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragic incident. The Commission views matters affecting public safety with the highest level of concern and remains committed to ensuring full accountability, strict regulatory compliance, and the protection of electricity consumers and the public across Liberia.”
Meanwhile, The Commission cautions licensed electricity operators across the country to be compliant with established safety, operational, and maintenance standards. Utilities are reminded of their obligation to take all necessary preventive measures to safeguard lives and property of customers and the public.
