Anti government protesters led by vocal radio talk show host, Mr. Henry Costa and his Council of Patriots have been their protest in the Liberian capital, Monrovia with hundreds/thousands converging on Capitol Hill on Monday, January 6, 2020.

So far (by 2Pm GMT), the trooping of protesters have been peaceful, with the Liberia National Police (LNP) officers closely watching as the demonstrators carry banners and placards, chanting slogans.

A local consortium of Human Rights organizations has on Monday deployed over 50 human rights monitors in the protest who are conspicuously dressed in their jacket with their inscriptions. The head of the group, Mr. Adama Dempster said they are to track every activity relating to the ongoing protest for subsequent reports.

One of our Reporters on the scene says the protesters appear to be poised to carrying on with their protest over nights, as few of them are taking mats and mattresses.

The COP protest comes as the group itself, which including some opposition politicians and parties, is fracturing by the day, with the former ruling Unity Party (UP) becoming the latest to announce that it is not part of this protest.

UP National Chairman, Mr. Wilmot Paye said in a statement on Sunday, January 5, 2020 that the protest has lost focus and that it is not in the supreme national interest of the country at this time.

There have been earlier defections from the COP including Margibi County Senator, Oscar Cooper and Alexander Cummings Alternative National Congress (ANC) party.
