The 400 Cartons Of Expired Medical Supplies Incinerated
By Emmanuel Koffa
GRAND KRU COUNTY, Liberia — A humanitarian gesture intended to strengthen healthcare delivery in Grand Kru County has ended in disappointment after more than 400 cartons of medical supplies, reportedly donated by Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa were incinerated upon being found expired.
County health authorities disclosed that the expired materials were destroyed on Friday evening, January 30, 2026, following a routine assessment and inventory of medical supplies earmarked for hospitals and clinics across the county.
Officials said the decision to burn the supplies was taken in the interest of public safety, as the items were deemed unsafe for use and posed potential risks to patients and healthcare workers.
The donation, which arrived in a 40-foot container containing assorted medical materials, was initially welcomed as a timely intervention to support healthcare services in the county.
However, health officials later discovered that huge portion of the supplies had passed their expiration dates, rendering them unusable.
While Senator Bartekwa’s gesture has been acknowledged as well-intentioned, the incident has raised concerns over oversight, quality control, and accountability in the handling of medical donations.
As of the time of filing this report, the senator’s office has not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
