Reports from Liberia’s southeastern Sinoe County say the recent hike in the prices of gasoline and other petroleum products has begun to have an effect on normal court activities in Greenville.
One report gathered by this news outlet says that normal court activities may be halted at the third Judicial Circuit Court due to the current situation, which has put a squeeze on jurors.
Gasoline is said to be sold in Greenville, Sinoe for LD$1,200 per gallon and due to this increase, Normal trial at the Court, which is being presided over by assigned Judge George W. Smith, is said to be at a standstill.
Due to this petrol hiking situation, Jurors who usually pay L$100 to attend court for now have to pay L$600 each daily, a situation which has made jurors unable to perform their function for jury service.
Gang rape case being stalled
Currently, there is an ongoing gang rape trial at the circuit court which has come to a standstill, because of the incapacitation of the jurors to attend to and fro, court service, due to this hike in transportation fare.
Given the hikes in prices especially transportation fare, Jurors who barely transport themselves to and fro for court attendances will not go to the court for court proceedings, beginning Monday.
They can’t afford to pay L$600 to and fro by motorcycle just to attend court proceedings, least to talk about witnesses traveling from far places outside the capital, Greenville, the report says. Report by Garmah Never Lomo, garmahlomo@gmail.com
