Voinjama, Liberia- In the northwestern Liberian County of Lofa, at hundreds of women farmers are to benefit from a six-month pilot project by the Center for Peace and Democracy Inc. (CPDI) with support from the government of Canada.
The project, which was launched in the area recently, is targeting at least 500 female from Voinjama and Foya districts.
Lofa County Coordinator for CPDI, Maxell Tosah put the cost of the project at USD$ 10,000.00.
He said the project will be extended to other parts of the County based on the performance of the female farmers during the first phase of the project.
Under the title, “promoting Food Security and Land Rights for Rural Female Farmers in Lofa,” this project is aimed at reducing poverty and to scale up local food production as well as generate income for rural women.
Speaking during the launch of the project in Voinjama city recently, the focal person for the Canadian Government in Liberia, Mr. Davester James called on the rural female farmers to be focused and ensure that the project becomes a reality and is sustained.
Mr. James said the rural female farmers will be engaged in low and upland activities, noting that the women benefiting from the project must ensure that Lofa regains its pre-war status as the bread basket of Liberia.
The rural female farmers in Lofa expressed satisfaction about the project and noted that it would help empower women in Lofa County.
They promised to help sustain the project.
