Monrovia, Liberia — Leaders of the Grand Kru Legislative Caucus have taken decisive action to prevent further escalation of the land dispute between the Bolloh and Sasstown communities.
An emergency meeting was convened on March 17, 2026 with Monrovia-based representatives from both communities to ensure that tensions do not spiral into open conflict.
Only two Caucus members were present—Caucus Chair, Senator Numene Bartekwa, and District #2 Representative, Jonathan Fonati Koffa—who co-chaired the meeting attended by more than 20 stakeholders.
The session highlighted contrasting reports: Sasstown leaders claimed miners were encroaching on their land, while Bolloh leaders alleged similar violations by Sasstown residents.
Both communities reported instances of violence and heightened anger, with fears of retaliation growing.
In response, Representative Koffa proposed concrete steps to de-escalate tensions, including a call for county authorities to submit verified reports, a moratorium on activities in the disputed area, and free movement of citizens between the communities.
He also announced a four-member monitoring team from his office, which will be reinforced with two additional delegates to oversee developments and report facts back to the Caucus.
The Caucus emphasized that all parties must comply with its resolutions and avoid acting on rumors or hearsay.
The leadership pledged continued oversight to ensure peace and prevent further conflicts, signaling a proactive and hands-on approach to governance in Grand Kru County.
