In Grand Cape Mt. County: 3 Frequently Violated Laws Put Into Focus

CAPE MT, Liberia- Women Solidarity Incorporated (WOSI), a civil society organization has ended a three-day stakeholder engagement educating rural dwellers on what they say are three frequently violated laws in the country, namely domestic violence, inheritance and rape laws.

Giving an overview of the training in Mesila Town, Garwula District over the weekend, WOSI’s Executive Director Caroline Armah informed the participants that awareness is to reach out to the rural dwellers in explaining to them in the simplest way possible on these three legal instruments.

According to her, an informed decision can be reached by them, the participants.

The organization explained to the participants things that constitute domestic violence, rape and inheritance laws.

Madam Armah indicated that the constitutive engagement is a brainchild of the UN Spotlight Initiative with Lofa, Nimba, Grand Cape Mount Counties being the target in pilot project.

The WOSI Director also disclosed that the team has already been to Nimba, and Lofa Counties, noted that after Cape Mount County, their next move will be Montserrado County.

Meanwhile, participants at the just-ended awareness forum have recommended for the amendment of the rape law, calling for the imposing of fine, among other things.

The participants came from three of the Districts in Grand Cape Mount County–Garwula, Porpa and Tewor Districts—who included youths, the elderly, women, the Judiciary, as well as security personnel from the Police, Fire Service, Judiciary, the Ministry of Gender, the United Nations Human Rights Section.

At the close of the exercise, copies of the three frequently violated legal instruments were given to the participants.

The participants lauded WOSI and partners for the consultative and stakeholders engagement and described it as very timely and has place them in a better position to fight for themselves in court.

The consultative engagement brought together 150 participants and it too place in Mesila Town in District two, Grand Cape Mount County.
