KAKATA JAIL BREAK: Over 48 Hours Later, Nearly 50 Prisoners Still On The Run

(Last Updated On: )

No Clue Yet As To What Led To This Major Security Breach

Liberian Justice Ministry officials are yet to say what led to the breach in security at the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, 71 kilometers east of Monrovia, as nearly fifty inmates remain on the run, more than 48 hours after fleeing their prison cells over the weekend.

This latest jail break comes amid serious concernment by rights groups and others about the overcrowding of prisons and detention facilities across Liberia. There are said to be thousands of pre-trial detainees at various prisons across the country.

“We urge the public to remain calm and to report any information that may lead to the recapture of the inmates,” a press release from the Ministry of Justice said yesterday, Monday, September 9, 2024.

The Ministry did not say whether say what was responsible for the jail break or whether any official responsible for the prison facility is being questioned.

But it says that the Liberia National Police has deployed additional officers in the search and apprehension of the jail breakers.
