Monrovia Liberia –As a means of building partnership and boosting public confidence, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has been holding a day-long media engagement and workshop, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening collaboration to heighten public awareness about the country’s energy sector.
The Chair of the LERC’s Board of Commissioners, Claude J. Katta said partnership with the media would can go a long way in boosting the consciousness of the society of energy consumers and the national electricity regulator’s mandate across Liberia.
Speaking today, Thursday, May 21, 2026 at a local hotel in Monrovia on tracking the implementation of Liberia’s electricity regulatory framework in Monrovia, Katta emphasized the importance of partnering with the media to enhance public awareness and confidence in the Commission’s work.
At forum, which brought together editors and journalists from several print and electronic media institutions, LERC Board Chair, Katta explained that the Commission was established as the autonomous regulator of Liberia’s electricity industry under the Electricity Law of Liberia of 2015, which created a new legal and regulatory framework for the sector.
According to him, the Commission is responsible for overseeing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, regulating tariffs, and ensuring compliance with safety and professional standards within the energy sector.
He noted that the annual media engagement initiative is intended to track the implementation of the Commission’s regulatory framework while also strengthening public education and awareness about the energy sector.
Katta further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advocating for affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy supply for the Liberian people.
The LERC boss thanked President Joseph Boakai for his continuing support to the national energy regulator.
Meanwhile, the President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Julius Kanubah has challenged journalists across Liberia to prioritize reporting on the country’s energy sector.
Kanubah stressed that the role of the media is critical in creating public awareness through accurate and effective information dissemination.
He noted that reporting on the energy sector requires specialized knowledge, professional skills, and a clear understanding of energy policies and best practices.
Speaking at the media engagement workshop, the PUL President stated that the work of the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission cannot effectively succeed without continuous public education and information sharing through the media.
According to him, access to electricity remains central to the livelihood and development of the Liberian people, making energy reporting a vital aspect of journalism in the country.
The PUL President further encouraged journalists to continue using the media as a tool for positive national transformation through responsible and impactful reporting.
Kanubah thanked the Commission for organizing the training, noting that it would help strengthen the capacity of journalists and improve their understanding of the electricity sector and the regulatory responsibilities of the LERC.
He described the work of the Commission as critical to Liberia’s energy sector, especially in regulating tariffs and overseeing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution throughout the country.
Participants at the training praised the Commission for organizing what they described as an impactful and informative engagement aimed at improving media understanding of the electricity sector.
Earlier, the Managing Director of LERC, Augustus W. Goanue made a presentation on how Liberia is rebuilding its national electricity infrastructure, after massive destruction caused by the Liberian civil war.
