Liberia Council of Churches elects new leaders, recommitting to peace & stability

The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has elected a new leadership, with a Pentecostal cleric, Rev Dr. Kortu Brown becoming the new President, promising “to continue to work for the unity of the church and peace and stability in Liberia.

Brown, who is the Bishop of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church, says “We are on a journey.” He was also elected along with a corps of other church leaders from the Lutheran, Baptist, AME Zion and Christian Methodist Episcopal churches in Liberia.

Rev. Dr. Jensen Seyenkulo, Bishop of the Lutheran Church was elected as 1st Vice President, while the Rev. Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, President of the Liberia Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention was elected as 2nd Vice President. Others elected are Rev. Christopher W. Toe, Presiding Elder of the AME Zion Church as General Secretary, and Rev. Deborah Toe, Head of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church as Treasurer.

According to a press release from the LCC, the newly elected officers are to steer the affairs of the organization over the next two years.

It says the election was done during the 31st General Assembly of Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) held at the S. Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church in Sinkor, Monrovia at the weekend.

The newly elected President of the council, Bishop Kortu K. Brown thanked The Almighty God for the opportunity afforded them to serve God’s people and the nation and also thanked the delegates for the choices.

He called on members of the council to pull together to promote Christian unity, witness and service in the country.

Bishop Brown spoke of the need to help strengthen ecumenism in the country at the level of the young people of the country.

He pledged to uphold and support religious harmony in the country through the construction of the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia.

At the same time, in its resolution at the end of the general assembly, the Liberia Council of Churches has resolved to continue to advocate for the strengthening of democratic governance in the country.

The Council took cognizance of the political Parties compliance with the Farmington River Declaration and prayed that all stakeholders continue to work for the consolidation of peace and stability in the country.

The LCC has committed itself to reviving the full structure of the organization to enable it function properly.

Earlier, the Keynote Speaker during formal opening ceremonies of the general assembly, the Bishop Emeritus of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, Bishop Sumoward Harris extol the role of the church in the development of, and the maintenance of peace and stability in Liberia.

Bishop Harries, a former President of the LCC challenged the Christian community to continue to work for unity and strengthening of democracy in Liberia.
