The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), in collaboration with the Liberia Seamen Union will next week host an International Seafarers Training in Monrovia, the NaFAA has announced.
The training, which begins on Monday July 16, 2018, will be facilitated by Experts from the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana, will bring together 50 Seafarers from the Liberia Seamen Union.
According to a press statement, the Seafarers Training is intended to enhance the capacity of the local Seafarers and also enable them meet the Requirements to work with international vessels in keeping with the IMO Mandatory Basic courses.
This is in strict accordance with the requirements of the revised Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW 1978 as amended) and the University’s regulations.
Courses to be offered during the One Week Seafarers Training include: Basic Fire Fighting, Designated Security Duties and Awareness (ISPS), Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, and First Aid to be facilitated by the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS).
Experts from the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana expected to facilitate the Seafarers Training include: Capt. Joshua Addo, Head of delegation, Morris Kennedy and Simeon Awah, delegation members.
The International Seafarers Training comes at a time when almost all of the legal documents legitimizing the activities of local Seafarers have expired.
This is said to have resulted to the barring of most local Seafarers from operating on International Vessels.
The Training of the local Seamen has been one of the top priorities of the current administration of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority under the Leadership of Madam Emma Metieh-Glassco.
