Liberian Women Empowerment Project Trains 50 Journalists In Gender-Responsive Reporting

GBARNGA, Liberia- In a move to promote accurate and sensitive media coverage of women’s issues in Liberia 15 counties, the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP) has launched a two-day Gender Responsive Reporting Training for 50 journalists in here in the central Bong County.

The training, which opened on Thursday, February 12, 2026, has been bringing together media professionals from seven counties: Bomi, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Grand Cape Mount, Montserrado, Gbarpolu, and Rivercess. The diverse geographical representation underscores the project’s nationwide outreach. Participants include 36 male and 14 female journalists, highlighting cross-gender collaboration in advancing ethical reporting.

Implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) with World Bank support, LWEP organized the workshop through Plan International Liberia, its Lead Service Provider. The session aims to deepen journalists’ understanding of the project’s objectives while building skills for gender-sensitive, fact-based journalism.

“We are equipping journalists to tell stories that challenge harmful norms and highlight empowerment initiatives, ”he added.

Day One Understanding LWEP’s Framework include Participants received a comprehensive overview of LWEP’s five key components- Changing negative social norms and strengthening community engeagment Combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV- Advancing women’s economic livelihoods and skills development- Increasing girls’ retention and completion rates in quality education. Strengthening gender-responsive health systems and public institutions for equality.

The session also covered project management tools, including the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).

Ethics, Fact-Checking, and Accountability

The training’s second day will focus on practical reporting skills, including Principles of gender-sensitive and ethical journalism- Fact-checking methodologies.

– The media’s role in fostering transparency and accountability in development programs.

The workshop emphasizes the power of responsible storytelling to support women’s economic empowerment, SGBV prevention, and institutional reforms across Liberia.
