The forthcoming speaker election scheduled for January 15, 2024, at Liberia’s House of Representatives marks a pivotal moment as the nation’s political landscape braces for a keenly contested battle between two prominent figures: Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa and Richard Nagbe Koon. This election carries substantial weight, shaping the direction of the legislative body for the upcoming term.

The House, comprised of seventy-three members representing diverse constituencies nationwide, reflects a fragmented political in badly divided nation.  The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) secured 25 seats, followed by 18 Independent Candidates, while the Unity Party obtained 10 seats. The Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) trail with 6 seats, setting the stage for a complex web of political alliance building ahead of the speakership election.

Cllr. Fonati Koffa, hailing from Grand Kru County District #2, emerged as a notable candidate, backed by the outgoing ruling CDC. His endorsement by 25 lawmakers from the CDC positions him as a significant contender for the speakership. On the other side stands Richard Nagbe Koon from the incoming ruling Unity Party, representing Montserrado District #11, vying for the same prestigious position.

Fonati Koffa’s Political

Cllr. Fonati Koffa, having served a term as the Representative of Grand Kru District #2, earned recognition for his altruism and impartial assistance to individuals across the political spectrum. His prior role as Deputy Speaker and legal expertise has bolstered his influence, throughout the country and extensively in the southeastern region of Liberia. Koffa’s business acumen, demonstrated through ownership stakes in companies like Tip Me and partnership in the prestigious Monrovia-based International Law Group, adds to his multifaceted persona. He has recently denied ownership in the later law group.

Notably, Koffa’s involvement in the prosecution of Sable Mining under the Sirleaf Administration, despite facing setbacks in the subsequent acquittal of the accused, marked a pivotal moment in Liberia’s legal landscape. His recent endorsement by the CDC, triumphing over internal rival Representative Thomas Fallah, consolidates his support base, projecting him as a formidable candidate. However, the path to victory mandates garnering 37 votes from the 73-member House, necessitating strategic maneuvering beyond party affiliations.

Richard Nagbe Koon

Representative Richard Nagbe Koon, a familiar face in Liberian politics, has served Montserrado District #11 and secured re-election in the recent polls. His expertise in financial matters, showcased through committee roles in the House, and his teaching stint at the University of Liberia underscore his diverse capabilities.

Koon’s collaborative approach in navigating political divisions, coupled with his astute financial insights, positions him as a viable candidate for the speakership. His potential elevation to the position promises enhanced analytical prowess of the numbers at the highest legislative level, enriching the government’s fiscal decision-making.

The Role of President-Elect Joseph N. Boakai

As the transition to President-Elect Joseph N. Boakai’s administration looms, his influence on the political terrain becomes imminent. Boakai’s public support for Richard Nagbe Koon aligns with the Unity Party alliance and signifies a concerted effort to ensure alignment between legislative actions and the President’s agenda. Boakai’s strategy of engaging lawmakers and advocating for Nagbe Koon’s candidacy aims to consolidate support, emphasizing the importance of constituent-focused projects in garnering votes.

Unity Party Alliance Strategy

The Unity Party Alliance’s meticulous plan encompasses committee placements, project executions across electoral districts, and social development initiatives, seeking to sway lawmakers in favor of Richard Nagbe Koon. The package includes discussions with President-Elect Boakai to address individual agendas, demonstrating a comprehensive approach towards consolidating support for Koon’s speakership bid.

Just ahead of January 12, 2024, the impact of President-Elect Joseph N. Boakai’s influence on the political landscape is beginning to take root. As the Weah Presidency enters its advanced stages in its Lame Duck state, all attention is now shifting towards Boakai. The initial decisions made by Boakai will be closely watched, as they will provide a glimpse into the trajectory of his government, something eagerly anticipated by the public and the donor community. President-Elect Boakai is publically supporting Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon for the Speakership. There are two primary reasons for this endorsement. Firstly, Nagbe Koon hails from the Unity Party alliance. Secondly, his alignment with this alliance suggests that he will actively champion the passage of the President’s Legislative Agenda. As an insider, Nagbe Koon’s involvement in every stage of the development of the President Legislative Agenda is expected to facilitate its smooth progression in the House. Boakai is already meeting lawmakers presenting the Nagbe Koon Package to them. Take quick money and jeopardize the interest of your constituents is exactly the message Boakai is presenting to the lawmakers. These lawmakers know the significance of implementing projects in their respective districts, so the votes will gravitate towards Nabge Koon in the last days of the Speakership Election. It will become difficult for Koffa in the last days of the Speakership Politics.

In addition, the Unity Party Alliance boasts a group of esteemed lawmakers, including prominent figures from the top echelons of the Legislature who are present to advise Nagbe Koon. Among them is Alexander Tyler, bruised by the Sable Mining Trial and sideline by the Coalition for Democratic Change. Tyler is on hand to contribute to the day to day management of the Nagbe Koon Campaign. Additionally, Sen. Prince K. Moye, a former Deputy Speaker, is available, alongside the current rising star in Liberian Politics known for handling significant negotiations, Vice President-Elect Jeremiah Kpan Koung, who spearheads the Nagbe Koon run for the Speakership. Kpan Koung recently met 29 representatives at his Paynesville residence in what was a test occasions for engagements line up before the Speakership Election on 15th January 2024.

Conclusion:

The upcoming election for the speaker of the 55th Legislature holds significant importance as the departing ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), led by President George M. Weah, is determined to solidify its position within the government, particularly in influential roles, as President-Elect Joseph N. Boakai prepares to assume power. Weah and the CDC are poised to engage in direct competition with Boakai and the Unity Party to secure the speakership.

However, it’s crucial to note that in Liberia, the President holds considerable power. Historically, the President tends to achieve their objectives, whether in the short or long term, and Boakai is no exception to this influence.
