Liberia’s Supreme Court refuses to stop June 7 protest

-Trashes Lawyer’s Writ of Mandamus

A writ of Mandamus filed by Citizens United to sustain peace and Democracy thru the center for the protection of Human rights last Tuesday has fallen on dead ground, with its Writ of Mandamus being trashed.

Following the filing of writ of Mandamus to the Supreme Court, the Justice in Chamber Joseph N. Nagbe cited the Justice Minister and Chairman of joint security Frank Musa Dean along with the Council of Patriots to conference on Monday June 3, 2019.

The conference was well attended by some head of the Council of Patriots including Henry P. Costa, Abraham Darious Dillon, Representative Yekeh Kolubah, Senator Sando D. Johnson among others, while Ministry of Justice was represented by Cllr. Wesseh A. Wesseh and others.

Even though the conference was not opened to the press, after the conference with the justice in chamber Joseph Nagbe, in an interview, vocal radio talk show host Henry P. Costa said, they were told by the justice in chamber that the court cannot stop them from exercising their constitutional rights.

Mr. Costa added that writ of mandamus filed by citizens united to sustain peace and democracy thru the center for the protection of Human rights that the Justice Minister should explain to them where the protesters will be gathering, which route they will be using.

Mr. Costa expressed that petitioners said their Article 13 will be violated which talks about free movement if they cannot be direct with venue and duration of the protest adding that many protest have occurred in the country, which did not still stop the free movement of people.

The radio talk host revealed that they will be gathering at Capitol hill to assemble but the duration of the protest depends on how President Weah will respond to some of their immediate demand and make solid commitment.

Some of the immediate demands are the dismissing of CBL governor Nathaniel Patray, Finance and planning development Minister Samuel Twaeh, Jr. publishing President Weah’s asset among others, as well as the  long term to be addressed are the war and economic crimes courts.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Citizens united to sustain peace and democracy thru the center for the protection of human rights Mr. Patrict Weah in an interview said council of patriots continue to say protest, instead of peaceful assembly meaning that they will be stopping other citizens free movement on that day.

Mr. Weah disclosed during the conference they mandated the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with COP to show a particular venue where the protesters will be assembling and communicate with the Justice in Chamber from Monday to Wednesday at 10am.
