Liberty Party taken to court for US$50,000 campaign debt

(Last Updated On: )

With the political dust settling following the 2017 presidential and legislative elections, stories of unsettled campaign liabilities have been emerging in Liberia.

Local media have reported a number of threats and actual pursuit of court actions against some of the candidates and political parties by creditors/vendors, especially cases dealing with indebtedness for printing of billboards, T-shirts and other campaign materials.

Now, a law suit has been filed at the Monrovia City Court against the Liberty Party (LP) for allegedly being indebted to a local printing house, TAS Group of Company in the capital, Monrovia.

The Court has Subpoena LP’s Chairman Benjamin Sanvee in connection the financial liability.

Monrovia City Court’s Judge Kennedy Peabody Wednesday issued a Writ of Subpoena for the LP Chairman to appear in Court on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 1:00pm to provide evidence to the Court surrounding the amount in question.

The Court’s January 17, 2017 Writ of Subpoena says that the Liberty Party Chairman risk being held in contempt, if he fails to show up on the date mention by the Court as provided by law.

But LP’s Chairman Sanvee told www.newspublictrust.com on Thursday that lawyers representing the party are handling the case.

When asked whether the TAS Company’s action of debt case was legitimate, Sanvee said the LP was indebted to it for printing services rendered during the recent elections.

Prior to the Court action, the Management of TAS Group of Companies is said to have made several efforts to get paid.

But the company eventually had to complainto the Court that LP was indebted to them in the tone of US$50,000.00 for the printing of Bill Boards and other election materials during just ended presidential and legislative elections.

LP of Cllr. Charles Brumskine came third in the October 10, 2017 presidential election, but challenged the credibility of the results by pursuing court action, claiming massive irregularities and fraud. The however later ruled that the party did not produce substantial evidence that would warrant a rerun of the polls. Report by Peter Toby
