MONROVIA (LINA) – The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has unveiled that as part of its Module of Garbage collection, it will soon deploy about 120 Waste Inspectors in Greater Monrovia so as to complement efforts aimed at keeping the city clean and green.
Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee said the deployment of the 120 Waste Inspectors as per the module of garbage collection, is being piloted by the Monrovia City Government amid efforts by the MCC to find a lasting solution to the age-old problem associated with the management of garbage in Greater Monrovia.
The action as pronounced by the MCC comes amid grave criticisms from both national and international partners as well as locals, regarding the manner in which waste is being managed in the country particularly the City of Monrovia.
Speaking at the official launch of the new Module of Garbage collection in Greater Monrovia, Mayor Koijee said the project is designed in a way that trucks will replace the traditional garbage bins across the city.
He emphasized that 120 waste Inspectors will be assigned across Monrovia as a means of ensuring that garbage is properly handled, clarifying that the primary role of the water Inspectors is to provide security and enforce the proper management of waste in the city.
The MCC boss added that some of the Inspectors will be given a routine assignment to tour the city in order to identify areas that are noncompliant so as to institute possible redress. He revealed that the previous waste disposing sites, except those at Center and Front Streets, will be closed temporarily.
Koijee clarified that the Center and Front Street sites will be used to pilot the project and subsequently, other sites will be identified by the MCC for continuation of the program.
He vowed to work collaboratively with both national and international partners including the business community, actors in the waste management sectors as well as donor partners in the implementation of the program.
Koijee also assured the public that the Government of Liberia through the Monrovia City Government will do everything possible in addressing the issue of waste management in the city.
“We often say to you that the people of Liberia reposed their confidence in His Excellency, President George M. Weah for the period of six years. And I don’t think such responsibility was given to us to give excuses to you. So we will do all we can to find an amicable solution to the problem of waste management in our country,” Mayor Koijee noted.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Monrovia has called on the public to cooperate with the MCC and the City Government at large in understanding the gains associated with the proper management of garbage.
He cited that waste remains a major challenge for the residents of Greater Monrovia and as such the requisite cooperation by citizens is required to address the situation.
Koijee told the residents of Greater Monrovia that they will now be required to bag their garbage and take them to the sites where trucks will be available to dispose of them.
He maintained that the trucks will be at those garbage disposal sites as early as 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
Koijee discouraged residents from disposing garbage beyond the stipulated time frame, stressing that violators will be penalized in accordance with the laws of the City Government of Monrovia.
He urged citizens to take ownership of the waste management sector of the country as a means of sustaining whatever program that is designed to solve the problem associated with waste.
