Move Expected To Boost Inter-Agency Collaboration & Enhance National Identification Registry

The National Identification Registry (NTI) is expected to hold a one-day national conference to enhance the national identification system and build the needed capacity to be able to capture the comprehensive biometric data to feed all agencies of government.

NIR’s Communication Officer, Daniel Sargbe, disclosed that in preparation for the national conference, the management of the registry has set up a nine-member steering committee to boost the work in collaboration with 20 ministries, agencies, commissions and other service providers releasing a comprehensive national data system.

Addressing a press conference in Congo Town, Mr. Sargbe explained that as a result of the conference, the NIR hopes to develop efficient and superior services to the public and private sectors in order to have national biometric identification system.

According to him, at the end of the conference, President Joseph Boakai is expected to officially launch the roadmap developed to enroll all citizens and foreign residents into the National Biometric Identification System

The initiative of the NIR is in keeping with President Boakai’s pronouncement that his government will strengthen registry to build the needed capacity to be able to capture the comprehensive biometric data needed all agencies.

Sargbe added that President’s pronounce is in line with Article 3.2(F) of the NIR Art, which states that the one of the key functions of the NIR shall be “to advise and assist the Liberian government and its agencies in improving and strengthening the collection, storage, evaluation and security of information and documents collected to register births, issue passport and other identification documents.”

The collaborating institutions expected to form part of this national conference and are to each second one staff to the steering committee of the conference are Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Transport, Finance and Labor.

Others are Health, the Liberia Immigration Service, the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo Information Services, Governance Commission, and the Liberia Business Registry.

The rest are the Central Bank of Liberia, the Liberia Bankers Association, the Liberia Telecommunication Corporation, the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation, the Information Ministry, the Lone Star Cell MTN and Orange Liberia.

“As a result of the conference,” he went on,” we hope to develop efficient and superior services to public and private sectors. so as to have a national biometric identification system which all data bases; as well as the sustainability of safe environment and proper access to services and welfare to citizens.”
