Monrovia, Liberia –– The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) on Thursday, December 11, 2025, hosted a vibrant and historic Fish Market Day, bringing together fishmongers and fish farmers from Montserrado and Margibi Counties for a large-scale exhibition and market sales.
A NaFAA press release says the fish market day, which was held at its Bushrod Island head office, was designed to boost livelihoods and promote local fisheries development.

The event featured an impressive display of fresh and dried fish products, all sold at affordable prices to encourage public participation and support for Liberia’s fisheries sector. The Fish Market Day attracted a broad range of attendees, including senior Government Officials, business owners, restaurant operators, and hundreds of ordinary citizens and foreign nationals.
Speaking at the event, J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr., Acting Director General of NaFAA, underscored the broader vision and national importance of the initiative.
“The goal of this Fish Market Day is to promote our fishmongers and fish farmers while empowering local communities across Montserrado and Margibi Counties,” Mr. Saygbe said. “By creating a platform for them to showcase their products, increase sales, and expand their customer base, NaFAA is strengthening both household incomes and community resilience. This event reflects our ongoing commitment to building a vibrant and sustainable fisheries sector that benefits every Liberian.”
Throughout the day, the market buzzed with activity as buyers and sellers engaged directly, strengthening the link between producers and consumers and boosting public confidence in locally sourced fish. The Fishmongers sold fresh fish and other fisheries products from the sea, while the Fish Farmers sold fresh farm catfish and Tilapia.
NaFAA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting Liberia’s fishers, advancing aquaculture, and promoting sustainable fisheries management—recognizing the sector as one of the country’s most essential drivers of livelihoods, nutrition, and economic growth.
Fishmongers and fish farmers also expressed joy over the significant financial gains realized during the event. According to Mr. Franklin Walker, a participating fish farmer, and Madam Annett Johnson, President of the Fishmongers Association of Liberia, the Fish Market Day provided them with record profits—the highest they have generated from any fish exhibition in Liberia. Both expressed gratitude to NaFAA for organizing an initiative that directly enhances income generation and market visibility for local producers.
