The Chairman of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) Jerome Korkoya has said election-related activities remain suspended until the Commission receives a mandate from the Supreme Court of Liberia.
The Supreme Court of Libera last Monday placed a stay order on the electoral process following a writ of prohibition filed to the Court by Liberty Party’s leader, Charles Brumskine.
The LP claims that the October 10 polls were marred by massive fraud and irregularities.
In its recent ruling into the matter, the Supreme Court upheld Brumskine’s writ of prohibition and mandated the electoral commission to expeditiously investigate the matter and find a solution.
In an apparent reaction to concerns about when the runoff will be held, Korkoya said while every Liberian has to right to know, NEC does not have the authority to fix a new date.
The NEC boss has meanwhile reiterated calls urging politicians to refrain from making up stories that could incite people into violence.
Responding to Cllr. Brumskine’s call asking him and his principal deputies to step aside, Cllr. Korkoya said he has at no time received any official communication informing him to recuse himself as Chairman of the Elections Commission.
