Amid mounting calls for judicial iidependnce, the newly seated Associate Justice on Liberia’s Supreme Court bench, Ceaineh Clinton Johnson has vowed to dispense justice with her conscience without external interference.
Associate Clinton Johnson also promised to “uphold legal integrity” in her position as she has done in the past.
She made the commitment during her formal seating ceremony in the Supreme Court’s chambers on August 29,2024.
Justice Clinton Johnson assured the people of Liberia that she will serve with distinction among her colleagues and to make the difference within the country’s justice system.
The newest Associate Justice on the five-member Supreme Court bench emphasized that the justice system will function based on the law and will not be influenced by any external forces.
Justice Clinton Johnson highlighted that when the justice system is tampered with by politicians and government officials, the stability of the nation is jeopardized.
She pledged her commitment to serving her country diligently, emphasizing that her decisions will be guided by the principles of the rule of law and due legal process, free from political interference.
She also expressed gratitude towards President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Senate, her family, and others for their support.
Chief Justice Yuoh on need for impartiality
Also marking remarks at the ceremony, Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh stressed the importance of impartiality in the court, urging all judges to treat everyone equally and prioritize adherence to the rule of law.
The Chief Justice further called upon lawyers and party litigants to ensure that justice is served and to guide individuals towards the proper legal resolutions.
Justice Yuoh behalf of the Supreme Court Bench warmly welcomed Associate Justice Johnson to fulfill her duties with transparency and dedication in upholding the integrity of the law.
For his part, Liberia’s Justice Minister Oswald Tweh pledged the government of Liberia through the Justice Ministry continuous support to the newly Associate Justice and promised to work with her.
Meanwhile, the President of the Liberian National Bar Association Cllr. Sylvester D. Rennie also congratulated the newly Justice and pledged the LNBA support toward and promised to hold the cordial relationship between the Bar and the Bench.
