New Liberian pressure group to demand return of LRD$16 billion

(Last Updated On: )

A new pressure group is being formed in Liberia to demand the return of the 16 billion Liberian dollars the ruling CDC government has confirmed has gone missing without trace.

Organizers of the new group consider the disappearance of the 16 billion Liberian dollars without trace so far as looting of state resources.

Acting under the code name, “Bring back our money,” the Proposed Coalition of Citizen Action Against Mass Looting in Liberia (COCAMLIL) has circulated information on its formation on Facebook and other Social Media platforms.

The formation of this group comes amidst mounting public concerns and outrage over the mysterious disappearance of some 16 billion Liberian dollars under the watch of the George Weah-led government.

Government has said the joint security are investigating the issue to get to the bottom of it, but opposition ANC leader, Alexander Cummings, executives of the former ruling Unity Party and many Liberians are calling for the setting up of an independent panel of inquiry.

The emerging pressure group, COCAMLIL is duly inviting several groups and organizations to a mass meeting today (Wednesday) the University of Liberia Capitol Hill Campus.

In a statement, the group says: “COCAMLIL remains very concerned and disturbed by the disappearance of L$16 billion public money. The organization would roll out series of action plan including petitioning the US Embassy, Chinese Embassy, UN, AU, EU and ECOWAS to ensure an Independent International Forensic Investigation.”

“COCAMLIL terms this “missing L$16 billion” as the most horrific mystery since 1847 and would peacefully demand independent investigation and full restitution of said amount without any delay. What has happened is beyond party, association and interest. COCAMLIL calls on all Liberians to turn out en masse today at 1:45pm for its first meeting at the UL Park.

The COCAMLIL statement signed by prominent University of Liberian student activist, Martin K.N. Kollie says it “appreciates the Liberian media especially journalists Philibert Brown of Hot Pepper and Rodney Sieh of FrontPage Africa for releasing this horrible revelation. We call on all Liberians to turn out.”

The statement concludes: “We must save the image of our Country. It is beyond anyone’s interest.”
