Amidst recent simmering tension as a result of unsolved land dispute, the Ganta Citizens United for Peace and Reconciliation has called on President George Weah to intervene into the Land Dispute in the city.

There has been a long standing land dispute in Nimba County’s commercial city of Ganta between members of the Mandings and Gio and Manos ethnic groups.

The Citizens peace group in a position statement over the weekend also wants the involvement of the outgoing United Nations Secretary Special Representative to Liberia as a means of resolving the matter.

In the statement read by Mr. Bangalee Trawally, the Ganta demanded the return of all parcels of land forcibly taken from individuals and families during the country’s 14 years civil war, which ended in 2003.

Mr. Trawally read the statement at a ceremony marking the dedication of the Ganta Central Mosque which was destroyed during the civil conflict.

Also Speaking, Nimba County Senator Thomas Grupee called for a national peace and reconciliation dialogue in the county.

Senator Grupee however criticized the forceful land grab in the county. But he insisted that the situation may be resolved at the national dialogue.

In his dedication and prayer sermon, the Grand Mufti of Liberia Shiekh Abubarkar Sumaworo called for peace and reconciliation in Nimban County.

Grand Mufti Sumaworo also admonished the two sides of the conflict to restore the prewar unity in the city where everyone lives as brothers and sisters.
