Education is the backbone of a country’s economic and social development, and it plays a vital role in promoting peace and preventing conflicts by building trust between parties. However, Grand Bassa County University faces multiple challenges that have raised concerns among students, faculty, and the local community.
One of the significant issues at the university is the need for proper governance. The university is being run by a two-person board of trustees, which has led to unresolved issues affecting the well-being of students and faculty. The lack of representation and transparency in decision-making has caused frustration among stakeholders, leading to a decline in the quality of education.
Another issue that has plagued the university is the closure of the nursing department. The department was closed for a prolonged period due to compliance issues. There has also been academic fraud and financial misapplication. These conditions have affected the students and the local community, which relies on the university’s healthcare services.
Moreover, the local authorities and elected parliament members need to take immediate action to address the various challenges at the university. The lack of support from the government has made it difficult for the university to operate effectively, leading to a decline in the quality of education.
Lastly, the bridge connecting the university and Buchanan is in disrepair, intermittently affecting the university’s academic activities. The bridge’s poor condition has made it difficult for students and faculty to commute to and from the university, leading to a decline in attendance and academic performance.
We strongly urge the incoming legislators and local authorities of Grand Bassa County to prioritize the Grand Bassa County University on their legislative agenda. Several operational challenges have occurred at the university during the Weah administration, and addressing these issues will not only improve the quality of education but also promote peace and development in the region. Failure to act now will have far-reaching consequences for the future of the university and the community it serves.
