TEMPLE OF JUSTICE, Monrovia- President Joseph Nyuma Boakai political adviser Macdella Cooper has been sued by Cecelia Kpor Koon alleged wife of Speaker Nagbe Koon for publicly voicing love affairs with husband, raising the legal question of “bigamy”.
Defendant Cooper was sued for over 3.5Million United States dollars at the Sixth Judicial Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice.
The Plaintiff complaint submits that she is a citizen of Liberia who also resides in the United States of America, but got married to the Defendant at Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware State, United States of America on July 29, A.D. 2015, as husband and wife; thus, making Plaintiff a legal and legitimate wife to Defendant. Attached hereto is a copy of Plaintiff Marriage Certificate Marked as Exhibit P/1 to form a cogent part of these proceedings.
What is bigamy?
“Bigamy, the act of marrying one person while still legally married to another, raises significant legal and ethical questions. Its treatment varies across jurisdictions, reflecting differing cultural, religious, and societal norms. Understanding its criminal implications is essential for individuals navigating marital laws or facing related allegations.” Is Bigamy a Crime and What Are the Legal Consequences? – LegalClarity
In her complaint, Mrs. Koon avers that while her action for divorce against Mr. Richard Koon remains pending and undecided before this Honorable Court, her marital union with Mr. Koon is legally intact and fully protected under Chapter 2, Subsection 2.1 of the Domestic Relations Law, Title 9, Liberia Code of Laws Revised. No decree of divorce has been entered, and therefore, no other woman may lawfully claim to be his wife.
Her complaint further submits that to her shock and profound distress, the Defendant, Macdella Cooper, has willfully, knowingly, and unlawfully inserted herself into Plaintiff’s marriage by publicly proclaiming herself to be the “new spouse” of Mr. Richard Koon.
According to madam Koon, Defendant Cooper has, through various public and private means, including but not limited to social media posts, voice recordings, and public appearances, represented herself as being in a marital relationship with Plaintiff’s husband.
Plaintiff avers that Defendant’s conduct constitutes a deliberate, malicious, and unlawful intrusion into Plaintiff’s marital relationship, intended to alienate the affections of Plaintiff’s husband, humiliate Plaintiff, and destroy the sanctity of her marriage while it is still legally valid. Such acts are in direct violation of Chapter 13 of the Domestic Relations Law, which provides relief for injuries to domestic relations.
Madam Koon, states that Defendant’s actions have not been mere private indiscretions, but rather a public and brazen campaign designed to undermine Plaintiff’s standing as a wife, cause severe emotional and psychological trauma, and prejudice the pending divorce proceedings. Attached hereto and marked as Exhibit P/2 are screenshots of Defendant’s social media posts and transcripts of video recordings on a pen-drive wherein Defendant claims marital status with Mr. Richard Koon.
At the result of madam Macdella Cooper alleged conduct, the complainant said, it’s a direct and proximate result of Defendant’s wrongful and intentional conduct, Plaintiff has suffered and continues to suffer Extreme emotional distress, mental anguish, anxiety, depression, and public humiliation; Loss of consortium, affection, comfort, and marital companionship; Damage to her reputation and social standing; Severe psychological trauma requiring medical and therapeutic intervention.
Madam Koon, therefore invokes Chapter 13, Subsections 13.1, 13.2, and 13.3 of the Domestic Relations Law, which hold any person liable who willfully and maliciously interferes with the marriage relationship of another. Defendant’s actions are not only morally reprehensible but legally actionable.
Plaintiff therefore prays this Honorable Court to award the following reliefs: General Damages in the amount of Three Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars (US$3,500,000.00) for the severe and ongoing psychological injury, emotional devastation, loss of affection, public disgrace, and trauma inflicted upon Plaintiff by Defendant’s unlawful and malicious conduct.
A Special/Punitive Damages in an amount to be determined at trial for Plaintiff’s medical expenses, therapy costs, and other tangible losses directly resulting from Defendant’s actions. A permanent injunction restraining Defendant from further contact with Mr. Richard Koon and from making any further public or private claims of being married to him. An order requiring Defendant to issue a public retraction of all false claims of marriage to Mr. Richard Koon.
WHEREFORE AND IN VIEW OF THE FOREGOING, Plaintiff brings this Action for Injuries to Domestic Relations & Damages against the within-named Defendant, pursuant to Chapter 3, Subsection 3.5 (1 & 2) of the Domestic Relations Law, and prays Your Honor and this Honorable Court to hold Defendant fully liable for the colossal damages stated herein, and to grant unto Plaintiff any further relief that may be deemed just, legal, and equitable in the premises, with all costs of these proceedings ruled against Defendant.
