Liberia’s President Dr. George Manneh Weah has been holding talks with former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai at his Foreign Affairs Office in Monrovia, the Presidency announced on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.
The two statesmen used the visit to discuss a wide range of national issues relative to maintaining peace and stability.
A presidential release said President Weah and the former Vice President also discussed national development and the prevailing economic situation in the country on Wednesday.
And the meeting comes in the wake of mounting tensions in the country and a war of word between some opposition parties (including Boakai’s Unity Party) and the ruling CDC government. It also comes ahead of the planned June 7 street protest which has the blessings of the UP.
Mr. Boakai and his former ruling Unity Party lost to Mr. Weah and his CDC party in the 2017 presidential election.
The Liberian leader updated Ambassador Boakai on the progress his government is making to transform the lives of Liberians, make the country attractive to foreign direct investment and to protect the tenets of democracy.
President Weah said he would continue to ensure that regular dialogue and consultations with every Liberian, irrespective of political and ethnic affiliations would be the hallmark of his administration towards moving the country forward in peace, harmony, and stability.
For his part, Ambassador Boakai commended President Weah for the warm reception accorded him and for the president’s unwavering tolerance and open leadership ability.
He assured President Weah of his willingness to contribute to the nation-building process in whatever way possible.
Wednesday’s meeting between the Liberian leader and former VP Boakai followed one held last week between one of the government strongest critics, Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Korlubah.
