A Trust Fund has been launched by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) in memory of its former President Kamara Abdullai Kamara (KAK), while President George Manneh Weah has made a commitment to support three of the deceased very young children.
The fallen former PUL President, who was born in 1972, is survived by four children, his wife and aging parents.
The Liberian leader made the commitment at the weekend during a well-attended Inter-religious memorial service organized by the PUL at the Monrovia City Hall.
Mr. Kamara, who died while on a working visit to Gbarnga on Tuesday, had already been buried in his hometown of Cape Mount on Wednesday, in line with his Muslim faith.
Launching the KAK Trust Fund, PUL President Charles Coffey told the audience at the memorial service that the bank account number for the Trust Fund will be published shortly. Friends and sympathizers can contribute to the upkeep of Kamara’s dependents.
Tributes were paid to the fallen PUL President by the government of Liberia, the Legislature, the PUL, friends and professional colleagues, ECOWAS, the UN and ActionAid, Internews, with all of them describing his death as a big blow to the Liberian media.
The various groups and individuals said his legacy in terms of commitment to professional media development, hard work, discipline and humility must continue.
President Weah led a host of government officials including House Speaker Dr. Bohfal Chambers, members of the Legislature, Associate Justice Kabineh J’aneh to Friday’s memorial service, which was attended by hundreds of media personnel and other sympathizers.
A book of condolence was opened at the Monrovia City Hall which mourners signed as they entered the theatre.
The late PUL President Kamara died suddenly on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, as a result of what doctors have said is “hypertensive stroke” at the Phebe Hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The Journalism Community in Liberia remains devastated by this irreparable blow on the media landscape.
The PUL said Kamara was one of the country’s professionals and priceless assets who meaningfully contributed to enhancing professionalism in the Media in Liberia.
The distinguished journalist professional life covered an extraordinary period during which he worked for several local and international institutions including The News Newspaper, limited time in public relations at the Capitol Building and rendered services at different points in the NGO Community.
Kamara was elected President of the Press Union of Liberia in 2013.
