Dr. Carlos R. Philips Visits BWI In Kakata, Margibi County

KAKATA, Liberia- The vising principal of the Booker T Washington High School in The United States, Dr. Carlos Philips has paid a courtesy call to the administration of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) here in Margibi County.

BWI is now headed by its first female principal, Dr. T. Nancy Freeman.

The visit took place early this week (Monday, June 17, 2024). Dr. Carlos Philips, Dr. Carlos Philips, was on Monday, 17 June at the school’s campus in Kakata, Margibi County.

Dr. Philips was accompanied by his wife Dr.Tyechia Philips along with Madam Louise W. Saiaway an alumni of the Booker T Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Mrs. Louis’s W. Saiaway also is a member of the Board of Governors of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) of Liberia.

A three-man delegation from America is currently visiting the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County.

The visit was meant to cement a sisterly relationship between the two institutions to foster development and positively impact the lives of students acquiring education at the two schools.

Speaking during the first day gathering, Booker T. Washington High School principal, Dr. Carlos R. Philips expressed his institution’s readiness to partner with the Booker Washington Institute to achieve the vision of rebranding the institution.

Dr. Philips narrated that Booker T. Washington High School in the United States has established relationships with several learning institutions that are bearing the name of the late Booker T. Washington across the globe.

He named Zambia among other Countries as beneficiary of their sisterly relationship.

According to him, students of Booker T. Washington High School in the US were able to partner with students in Zambia to share knowledge, a relationship he pointed out delivered the establishment of electricity among others.

Lamenting on his school’s relationship with BWI, Dr. Philips disclosed the establishment of a self-control electricity, water supply, and Internet connectivity to be done by students of the Booker Washington Institute.

He further that his school’s partnership will however deliver knowledge sharing to make BWI second to none in Liberia.

In response, BWI Principal Dr. Nancy Freeman thanked the team for recognizing the institution by proposing a sisterly relationship with them.

She named empowerment for teachers, rebranding of the institution, refurbishing of the dormitories, advancement of laboratory equipment, faculty and student exchange, refurbishing of faculties quarter  at the school as major challenges that will need the support of partners.

She further that her administration envisages rebranding the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) into a complete Model Center of Academic Excellence.

Dr. Freeman however welcomed the opportunity of having a sisterly relationship with the Booker T. Washington High School in America, something she mentioned will help to fast-track the institution’s developmental agenda.

The Booker T Washington Institute in America was established in 1885 and has since graduated several individuals some of whom are in both the private and public sectors across the world.

While on the other hand the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Kakata, Margibi County was founded on 1929 with this year’s on 29 June which will see this marking the 95th Founder’s Day.

Dr. T. Nancy Freeman is an alumnus of the institution. The former Youth & Sports Deputy Minister and educator Dr. T. Nancy Freeman is the first female to be appointed as Principal of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) replaying former principal, Atty. Harris Tarnue Fumba Tarnue.

President Joseph N Boakai appointed Dr. T. Nancy Freeman on 28 April to serve as Principal of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) making her the first female to serve in such position.
