A protest started Wednesday afternoon in front of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) in Monrovia, with calls for the removal of NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya.
The protest is being organized by stalwarts of the ruling Unity Party (UP), with one of the spokesmen, businessman George Kailando saying that the protestors will not leave until the NEC boss steps down or is removed from office by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
The small number of protestors peacefully assembled on the Tubman Boulevard in Sinkor, carrying placards with inscriptions calling for the exit of the NEC boss. One of them read, “Korkoya must go”.
Riot police took up positions at the entrances of the NEC headquarters while other officers of the Liberia National Police patrolled the perimeters carrying AK-47 rifles.
Earlier on Wednesday Morning, Kailondo told a local radio (Sharta FM) that they are also mobilizing hundreds of supporters to besiege the residence of President Sirleaf, who is also the ruling UP’s Standard Bearer Emeritus.
Kailondo is also a lawyer and financier of the UP.
He vowed that the protestors won’t leave the President’s residence until she dismisses Korkoya and the Executive Director of the electoral body, Lami Lighe.
UP’s presidential candidate, incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai is due to face up with the George Weah of the main opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in the rescheduled presidential runoff election on December 26, 2017.
