Sen. Moye Says Moves Underway To Improve Liberia’s Education System

The Liberian Senate has begun taking frantic steps in working with all stakeholders and international partners towards changing the dynamics and improving education outcomes now and in the future, says Senator Prince Moye.

Sen. Moye, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, said that the Liberian Senate understands the mounting challenges and constraints institutions in the education sector are facing.

He was speaking when he delivered the keynote speech at the program marking the observance of the world Parent Teachers Association Day organized by the National Parent Teachers Association in Monrovia over the weekend.

According to him, such steps will eventually bridge the gaps in the thereby providing the means for teachers and students to excel.

“As we begin taking steps for the betterment of the sector,” Senator Moye went on, “we depend on every single parent, teacher, and other stakeholders to help us make this successful for the future of our children.”

Also speaking, the President of the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), Mary Nyumah cautioned parents to work along with teachers in order to bring pressure bear on the government, so as to improve the welfare teachers in provision of education.

According to her, a survey conducted recently has revealed that some of the people placed in the classrooms are not teachers, while others are misplaced.

She encouraged parents to work with school administrators in order to provide good education for their children in Liberia.

In remarks, the Chairman of the National Parent Teachers Association, Mason Saweler stressed the need for the Liberian government to increase the allotment for education in the national budget to 20 percent.

According to him, this will help alleviate the many challenges facing the education sector in the country.

Mr. Saweler cautioned the Ministry of Education to work with the National Parent Teachers Association in order to help supervise and monitor the education system in the country

The program was held under the theme, “Parents Will Change Liberia Through Education.”

It was graced by Representative Mariama Fofanah, Chairperson of the House Committee on Education; people representing PTAs from the 15 counties; the National Teachers Association of Liberia, among others.
