Ahead of Tuesday’s elections, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has made a passionate plea to all citizens for peaceful polls saying, “all must respect the outcome of the election as declared by the National Electoral Commission.”

Sirleaf, who is close to ending her second and final six-year-term of office next January, made the call in a live nation-wide radio and television address Monday.

“The NEC has established a system that is accountable, transparent and based upon the highest standards available,” Africa’s first elected female President told her citizens,

She called on politicians and ordinary Liberians to take this crucial period to reflect on how far the post war nation has come.

“Let us take a moment to reflect on how far we have come, as a nation, and as a people, from a society destroyed by conflict and war, to one of the most vibrant democracies in the West Africa region,” the 78-year-old President cautioned.

Besides Tuesday’s polls being peaceful, the Liberian leader charged her citizens “to respect every Liberian’s right to vote with dignity and pride.”

With some 20 presidential candidates contesting the lone office and close to 1,000 others vying to fill the country’s 73-member House of Representatives, President Sirleaf cautioned, “Vote for the person and persons you believe will make Liberia a better place.”

There are 2.1 million registered Liberian voters who are expected to cast their ballots in Tuesday’s polls.
