Some Liberian Lawyers “falsely solicit Money from Clients in the name of Judges”

-Judge Nancy Sammy says this brings shame to the legal profession

The Presiding Judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Bomi, western Liberia, Judge Nancy Sammy has asserted that lawyers who falsely solicit money from their clients in the name of Judges to assign case are shame to the legal profession.

Judge Sammy was speaking in the provincial capital, Tubmanburg on Monday, February 10, 2020 at the formal opening of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Bomi County.

According to Judge Sammy lawyers should endeavor in settling cases because they are the first Judge of all disputes.

She spoke on the theme: greater efficiency expected in the legal profession.

The 11th Judicial Circuit Court judge added that lawyers have the share responsibility and duty to perform to seek the welfare of their clients in pursuit of Justice to end cases on their behalf if even they will not win.

She maintained that their oath compare them to defend the Constitution.

There is an indisputable fact that many seem to lose sight of in every idea, be it directly or indirectly by interfering or application, violate the principal of their religion, which constitute bridge of ethics, the prominent Liberian female Judge added.

Judge Sammy said she has observed that some lawyers are in the constant habit of encouraging their clients of initiating litigation for the sole purpose of money and as soon as received the money, and file the action, that is the end of that case.

The presiding Judge of of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Bomi County claimed that some lawyers do not making follow up with their clients’ cases.

She disclosed that in the 24 cases on the dockets, eleven criminal cases raging from murder, Statutory rape, gang rape and illegal procession of narcotic drugs; while 13 there are 13 cases civil cases which range from damages, injunction among others.

For his part, the County Attorney of Bomi, Abraham Tamba Gboree said integrity on the part of lawyers and Judges does matter.

Cllr. Gboree said there are lawyers who do everything outside their oath but they will do everything possible to make the term of court successful and the integrity of their profession upheld.

Meanwhile, the president of the Bomi County Bar T. Siafa Carey, said they will maintain the integrity of their profession but admonished his colleagues to seek their clients’ welfare.

Cllr. Carey added that their profession goes with responsibilities and they as lawyers can either destroy or build the country, based on their conduct of dispensing justice.

He added that their duty as lawyers is to safe guard their profession and must be willing to tell their clients the truth and lawyers should settle cases between parties if the need arises, in order to reduce some of the burden from the court dockets.
