In Grand Kru County, Liberia

BARCLAYVILLE, Liberia — Dozens of market traders in Grand Kru County on Sunday took to the streets in a peaceful protest to express dissatisfaction over a recent increase in market table registration and daily ticket fees.
The protest was organized by members of the Grand Kru County Marketing Association, who said the new fees imposed by their leadership are too burdensome for small-scale traders.
According to the marketers, the market table registration fee has been increased from 700 Liberian Dollars to 2,000 Liberian Dollars, while the daily ticket charge has risen from 20 Liberian Dollars to 50 Liberian Dollars.
The protesters said the sudden increase is unreasonable and could negatively affect their ability to conduct business and support their families. Many traders depend on daily sales, they noted, warning that the higher fees may discourage some from continuing their businesses.
Some of the marketers also raised concerns about the transparency behind the decision, describing the increment as unfair and calling on authorities to review the policy.
The protesting traders are urging the county authority of Grand Kru to intervene and hold discussions with the leadership of the marketing association to find a fair and workable solution.
In response to the demonstration, county authorities assured the protesters that their concerns would be taken seriously. Officials promised to engage the leadership of the marketers’ association and work toward resolving the issue.
The protest remained peaceful as traders called for dialogue and immediate attention to what they described as an excessive financial burden on market vendors.
