University Of Liberia Board Of Trustees Gets Tough: Orders Faculty To Return To Work Now Or Face Consequences

As Current President Dr. Nelson Remains In His Post, As It Announces Search Committee

Days after they announced a go-slow action until President Joseph Boakai removes the University of Liberia (UL) President and his administration, the UL Faculty Association (ULFA) and the Staff Association have been ordered to return to the classroom immediately or face serious consequences, the Board of Trustees headed by Grand Kru County Senator Bartekwa said in a resolution in Monrovia on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

All faculty and staff are hereby directed to report to their normal duties with immediate effect or risk administrative action.

President Joseph Boakai is Visitor to the state -owned University.

It only emerged on June 15, 2024 that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai had given a directive for the University of Liberia (UL) Board of Trustees to hold an urgent meeting to “formalize the establishment of a Search Committee tasked with identifying and selecting the new leadership of the University” since May 27, 2024, but the order has not been carried out close to three weeks after. Resolutions and Recommendations of the Board of Trustees

(June 19, 2024)

  1. The University of Liberia Board of Trustees, considering its fiduciary responsibilities as provided in the Charter of the University, and the directive of the Visitor of the University of Liberia, convened in an Extraordinary session to deliberate on the current issues confronting the University of Liberia.
  2. Given recourse to its mandate, the Board of Trustees appointed an Ad-Hoc Mediation Committee to meet with all stakeholders of the University, including the leaderships of the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA), the University of Liberia Student Union, and the President of the University of Liberia and his Cabinet.
  3. After deliberating all the issues and concerns of the stakeholders as mentioned supra, the Board of Trustees resolved as follows:
  • A Search Committee for a new President of the University of Liberia is hereby announced and given a minimum of three months to complete its mandate. The constitution of the Committee is as follows:
    1. Archbishop Rev. Dr. Gabriel Blamo Jubwe, Chair
    2. Al-Hassan Conteh, 12th President of the UL, Co-Chair
    3. Ophelia Inez Weeks, 14th President of the UL, Member
    4. Augustine Konneh, Senior Advisor to the President, Member
    5. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Former Secretary of the Board of Trustees, and Former Minister of Finance, Member
    6. Edna Johnny, President, UL Faculty Association, Member
    7. Dee Preston, President, UL StaffAssociation, Member
    8. Martin WIeh Pennie, President, UL Alumni Association, Member
    9. Mary Korpo Kerkula, President of ULSU, Member

10.Dr. Togba-Nah Tipoteh, Professor Emeritus of Economics, UL, Member

11.Assistant Professor Amanda Musu Dakagboi, Veteran Educator, Member

  • All faculty and staff are hereby directed to report to their normal duties with immediate effect or risk administrative action.
  • The current administration of the University is hereby mandated by the Board of Trustees to complete the current semester by immediately resuming all academic and administrative activities, including resumption of classes, and the holding of the 104th Commencement Convocation. The Administration should also issue without delay the revision of the academic calendar considering the time lost, but not exceeding ninety days.
  • The Administration is herewith directed to effect the payment of all part-time faculty without further delay.
  • The Board of Trustees directs an audit of the University within ninety days.
  • The Administration is hereby mandated to procure a bus for the Sinje Campus and put in place a seamless process to facilitate the transportation of students to and from the Fendall Campus.
  • The Board of Trustees appeals for the cooperation of all stakeholders of the University in observing these measures in the interest of the smooth running of the University.
