A press statement from the office of Vice President Jerimiah Kpang Koung has disclosed that he has held top level discussions with Bayelsa State in Nigeria about collaboration in the petroleum sector.

VP Koung recently ended an official visit to the Federal Republic of Nigeria where he represented President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. at the Inaugural Ceremonies of Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State which took place on February 14, 2024.

“On the sidelines of the Inaugural Ceremonies, Hon. Koung held discussions with Governor Diri on the possible collaborations with Bayelsa State in the petroleum sector and to encourage potential investors,” the statement from the VP’s office said.

“Bayelsa State is famously called the “GLORY OF ALL LANDS” and contains Nigeria’s largest gas reservoir or crude deposits. The State has immense potential in the Petroleum industry, Agriculture, and Fisheries,” the press statement said.

It can be recalled that when the Unity Party government of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf first took power in 2006, her government signed an oil deal with Nigeria.

The Vice President also “indicated that Liberia and Bayelsa State can open new streams of economic cooperation and maximize the potential of both economies in the areas of Agriculture and Fisheries.”

VP Koung  is also said to have met an array of top Government officials of Nigeria to strengthen bilateral relations between Liberia and Nigeria.

Vice President Koung also held talks with his Nigerian Counterpart, Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The two leaders recognized the need to forge strong economic bonds and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the long-standing diplomatic relations between both Nations and peoples.

VP Koung was engaged in fruitful discussions with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the press statement, the meeting centered on the democratic gains Liberia has made and the need to form strategic global and regional partnerships for economic development.

Vice President Koung will travel to the Kingdom of Morocco later today to attend the Parliamentary Conference on South-South Cooperation and address the forum on February 16, 2024.
