Calls For National Unity 

Monrovia, Liberia – The Nimba Council of Elders has commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his Government for the political will and determination demonstrated in confronting the threat of illicit drugs and other harmful substances in Liberia.

The Council said that while no government can completely prevent individuals with criminal intentions from attempting to bring illegal substances into the country, the true test of leadership is the resolve to detect such activities, hold those responsible accountable, and allow the law to take its course. The Elders urged the Government to remain firm and ensure that the fight against drugs is pursued without fear or favor and regardless of status, influence, political affiliation or personal connection.

“Drugs know no tribe, political party, religion or social status. Their consequences reach every community, destroy the lives of our young people, weaken families and threaten the future of our nation,” the Council stated.

The Council also called on traditional and religious leaders, parents, young people, civil society organizations, communities and all Liberians to join the fight, stressing that Government alone cannot defeat the drug menace.

“As elders, we have a responsibility not only to the present generation but also to those yet unborn. We must not leave to our children a country overwhelmed by a problem we had the opportunity and responsibility to confront,” the Council emphasized.

The Nimba Council of Elders reaffirmed its support for every lawful and genuine effort to combat illicit drugs and called for stronger prevention, law enforcement, prosecution, treatment and rehabilitation measures across the country.
