YOTAN Sets Out To Promote Accountability And Grassroots Democracy

VOINJAMA, Liberia— The Youth Transforming Africa Narrative (YOTAN) has conducted a civic accountability forum with citizens of Lofa and Nimba as part of its new project, “Local Engagement for Accountability and Democracy.”
The initiative seeks to strengthen citizens’ capacity to promote accountability and democratic participation.
Giving an overview, YOTAN’s Executive Director, Donnish Koizuwonba Pewee disclosed that the current project is being implemented in Grand Bassa, Montserrado, Margibi, Bong, Lofa, and Nimba counties with support from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
He said, the initiative is designed to create opportunities for citizens to engage directly with community leaders and other stakeholders on issues affecting their communities.
The town hall meeting brought together citizens and community stakeholders to discuss accountability, transparency, citizen participation, and the importance of constructive engagement between citizens and public officials.
He emphasized that informed and active citizens are essential to building accountable institutions and strengthening democracy.
Pewee encouraged participants to understand their rights and responsibilities and to use peaceful and constructive approaches to demand transparency from those entrusted with public resources and authority.
The meeting also provided a platform for citizens to raise concerns about challenges in their communities and discuss possible solutions. Participants shared their experiences and highlighted the need for stronger communication between citizens, local authorities, and other decision-makers.
He further indicated that the Local Engagement for Accountability and Democracy project will focus on building citizens’ knowledge and skills so they can effectively participate in local governance processes and advocate for greater accountability.
“Strengthening citizen participation at the local level can contribute to improved public service delivery and help communities play a more meaningful role in decisions that affect their daily lives,” Pewee noted.
Participants at the town hall meeting welcomed the initiative and called for continued engagement with citizens beyond the initial meeting. They stressed that regular dialogue between communities and authorities is important for addressing local concerns and building public trust.
