100 Patients Benefit From Free Surgeries In Buchanan, Liberia

(Last Updated On: )

Second Of Its Kind In Two Years By Nyonblee Cares Foundation, Exceeding Its Original Target Of 86 Patients

A total of 100 people have benefited from a major surgical outreach at the Government Hospital in Buchanan, organized under the sponsorship of the Nyonblee Cares Foundation with additional funding by the US Board of the Foundation which provided medical supplies.

Three dedicated doctors took on the challenge from August 16-17, 2025 in the surgical theater, supported by volunteer health teams from River Cess and Grand Bassa Counties.

The initiative, the second of its kind in two years, exceeded its original target of 86 patients, treating 100 individuals.

According to the Foundation’s Director, George Stewart, the effort was made possible through concerted collaboration. The Nyonblee Cares Foundation in the United States contributed surgical materials, while local medical teams volunteered their expertise under strenuous conditions.

The first surgical outreach, held in 2023, successfully treated 87 patients, surpassing its target of 50.

Grand Bassa County Health Officer, Dr. Jude Wesseh, disclosed that patients were screened for various health conditions, including: Hernia – when part of an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall, often appearing as a lump in the abdomen or groin. Undescended Testes – when one or both testicles fail to move into the scrotum before birth or shortly after. Cyst – a closed sac filled with fluid, pus, or other material that can grow in tissues or organs. Lipoma – a slow-growing, fatty lump under the skin, usually noncancerous and painless. Myoma (Fibroid) – a noncancerous muscle growth in or on the uterus, sometimes causing heavy bleeding, pain, or fertility challenges. Hydrocele – a fluid-filled sac around a testicle that leads to swelling of the scrotum.

The outreach, estimated at a cost of US$30,000, was funded and supported by the Foundation’s Founder, Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence. In an interview with journalists at the Government Hospital, she explained that her visits went beyond the outreach itself, as she also provided medical assistance to patients admitted before the exercise began.
