The gravity of the scale of the new Coronavirus variant which has griped Liberia seems not to be abated, with seven deaths recorded from the disease in just 24 hours–Sunday, June 20-Monday, June 21, 2021, according to the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) Update.

From a total death toll of 99 on Sunday, the number of deaths by Monday rose to 106, with 37 new confirmed cases of the virus but no new recovery.

The spike in the third wave of the virus comes amid calls from various quarters for the George Weah government to step up measures to bring the pandemic under control by imposing a nationwide lockdown. After call from the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) early this week, Private school teachers have added their voice by urging the government to do so.

Currently, there are 871 confirmed cases in the country, with most of them concentrated in the capital, Monrovia. There are 209 new contacts being followed, with a total of 1,192 contacts health officials are following.
