Monrovia – After weeks of violating the National Code of Conduct Act, which bar appointed officials from engaging in political activities such as elections canvassing, the Executive Mansion has announced that Liberia Maritime Authority (LMA) Commissioner, Lenn Eugene Nagbe has been given a leave of absence.

For the past few months, the Maritime boss has been one of the many ruling party and opposition politicians who have been openly involved in pre-campaign activities in the country, canvassing for President Weah and the ruling CDC party and calling on the Liberian people to give the Liberian leader a second term.

Neither Nagbe nor other ruling party and opposition party politicians involved in violating Liberia’s elections law forbidding pre-campaigning has been penalized.

This law defines pre-campaigning as selling aspirant/candidate or soliciting votes for them ahead of the officially designated campaign period spelled out in the National Elections Commission’s electoral timetable.

Like other appointed officials of the ruling party, he and others have till now been in violation of the Code of Conduct law which is spelled out in Part 5:

“PART V: POLITICAL PARTICIPATION
5.1 All Officials appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia shall not:
a) engage in political activities, canvass or contest for elected offices;
b) use Government facilities, equipment or resources in support of partisan or political activities;
c) serve on a campaign team of any political party, or the campaign of any independent
candidate”

Commissioner Nagbe had earlier been named as head of the ruling CDC party’s 2023 campaign team.

But an Executive Mansion press release issued today, Wednesday, July 192023 said: “The President of Liberia, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah has granted a three-month leave of absence to the Commissioner of Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Lenn Eugene Nagbe. ”

According to the release, this leave of absence will take effect on August 4, 2023, a day before the NEC official campaign begins. And that date is some two weeks from now.

President Weah says “while Commissioner Nagbe is away, the Senior Deputy Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority, Mr. Emmanuel N. Reeves will administer the affairs of the institution as Officer-in-Charge.”
