The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) extends its profound appreciation to the Honorable House of Representatives for the historic passage of the “Act for the Ownership, Management, Licensing, Sustainability, and Operations of Community Radio Stations in Liberia,” an ALICOR press release said in Monrovia over the weekend.
This landmark legislation marks a significant step forward in strengthening grassroots communication, promoting media freedom, and empowering rural communities with reliable, independent, and accessible information.
The House of Representatives’ passage of this Act demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing democratic participation, enhancing community development, and safeguarding the role of community radio as a vital platform for civic engagement and national cohesion. ALICOR acknowledges the tireless efforts of lawmakers, civil society partners, media advocates, and community stakeholders who contributed to shaping this critical legislation.
The Act provides a clear regulatory framework that will improve licensing processes, ensure sustainability, promote professionalism, and protect the integrity of community broadcasting nationwide.
ALICOR now calls on the Honorable Liberian Senate to swiftly concur with this progressive legislation, solidifying the legal foundation needed to strengthen community radio institutions and expand their impact across all counties.
In an age where accurate information and community-driven dialogue are essential, this Act will help safeguard Liberia’s democracy and support inclusive national development. Community radios remain the heartbeat of many rural communities—educating, informing, mobilizing, and giving voice to the voiceless.
ALICOR reaffirms its readiness to work collaboratively with government institutions, development partners, and all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this new legal framework once fully enacted, said the press release signed by Emmanuel Degleh, ALICOR Secretary General.
