The National Working Group against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) traditional practice wants zero tolerance to FGM in Liberia and Africa and the World at large.
Female Genital Mutilation or FGM is all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for cultural, religious or other non-medical reasons which make them loss feeling during sexual intercourse.
The National Working Group against FGM comprises seventeen civil society groups including the National Association against Traditional Practices affecting the health of Women, Women against Female Genital Mutilation, the Independent Commission on human rights, Action aid Liberia and Women Solidarity Incorporated among others.
The anti FGM National Working Group said now is the time for government to take positive steps at eliminating the practice of FGM in the country.
The Executive Officer of Women Solidarity Incorporated and Co-Chair of the National Working Group against FGM Deah said that a Bill on FGM hat will soon to be brought before the Legislature that will not prevent the practice.
She told a news conference earlier this week that there is a need for legal instrument that will help victims gain access to justice in Liberia, mainly in rural area.
