BUCHANAN-ArcelorMittal Liberia has announced the kickoff of several new social development projects for Bong, Nimba, and Grand Bassa Counties, as well as at the national level to further support communities in counties where it operates, a press release from AML said on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.
Presenting the projects recently in Bong, Nimba and Grand Bassa Counties after separate meetings with the Superintendents of the three counties, AML’s Head of Government and Community Relations Marcus Wleh said the launch of the new initiatives will help to deepen AML’s partnership and strengthen relations with its communities.
“We believe that these activities would bring us closer together and reinforce our existing strong partnership as we conclude 2021 together and keep moving into the future,” Wleh emphasized.
Projects announced by ArcelorMittal Liberia include a USD Fifty Thousand ($50,000) scholarship program for students at public colleges and senior high students in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa Counties; Donation of school supplies to 50 schools in communities around the mines and railroad in the three counties; Provision of USD Fifteen Thousand ($15,000)as logistical support to help Nimba, Grand Bassa, and Bong Counties prepare for the 2021/2022 National County Sports Meet; Renovation of the roof of the G. W. Harley Hospital in Sanniquellie, Nimba County; and the launch of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Football tournament.
Other initiatives include:
- Solar electrification of the streets of Yekepa Township;
- Renovation of the Zolowee Public School in Nimba County;
- Sponsorship of a youth conference;
- Launch of community health outreach and public safety awareness around the rails and motorways as well as weeklong volunteer activities by employees of AML and community residents.
These initiatives have been highly commended and considered timely by the Superintendents Esther Walker of Bong, Nelson Korquio of Nimba County and Janjay Baikpeh of Grand Bassa.

In Ganta and Buchanan, Superintendents Korquio and Baikpeh shared similar gratitude to the management of ArcelorMittal Liberia and also appealed to the company for additional support towards their counties’ representation in the County Sports Meet, as well as more opportunities for jobs for locals.
These latest social and development programs by AML further reinforce the company’s commitment to our communities and Liberia as a whole.
